America Must Be Righteous To Succeed

God Will Only Protect A Righteous Nation, especially it it's called America.

There's a little known Bible story about a Prophet by the name of Balaam. He lived at the time the Children of Israel were just starting to drive the inhabitants out of the land of Palestine, their future home. The King of Moab, Balak, was witnessing how Israel could not be stopped by the inhabitants of the land.

So, knowing Balaam was a prophet, he sent for him to curse Israel. At first, God wouldn't let Balaam go. Then, the second time Balaam asked, God permitted it. Balak was ready to give Balaam all sorts of wealth if he would just curse the Israelites. On three occasions Balaam had Balak's people build seven altars where Balaam offered seven bulls and seven rams, hoping to appease God. But when the word of God came, it was to bless Israel rather than to curse them, which caused only consternation for King Balak.

Now is where the story gets interesting. Before he leaves, Balaam tells Balak of something he can do, himself as king, that will cause the anger of God to come on Israel. He "...taught Balak to cast a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. (Rev. 2:14)" That is, he taught Balak that if he could get Israel to sin, that God would then remove his blessings from Israel. Balak took Balaam's counsel and immediately started to implement this plan which caused Israel to stumble. (The story can be found in Numbers 22:1-25:3) [In Judges we read that the Israelites killed Balaam for his treachery.]

Many in the Christian world have a really hard time understanding how the Lord could command the Israelites to indiscriminately kill men, women and children. It sounds pretty unchristian like, doesn't it. Refering to Latter-day Saint writings again we get an answer: They were destroyed because of their wickedness.

1 Nephi 17:32-35, 37-38: And after they had crossed the river Jordan he did make them mighty unto the driving out of the children of the land, yea, unto the scattering them to destruction. And now, do ye suppose that the children of this land, who were in the land of promise, who were driven out by our fathers, do ye suppose that they were righteous? Behold, I say unto you, Nay. Do ye suppose that our fathers would have been more choice than they if they had been righteous? I say unto you, Nay. Behold, the Lord esteemeth all flesh in one; he that is righteous is favored of God. But behold, this people had rejected every word of God, and they were ripe in iniquity; and the fullness of the wrath of God was upon them; and the Lord did curse the land against them, and bless it unto our fathers; yea, he did curse it against them unto their destruction, and he did bless it unto our fathers unto their obtaining power over it. And he raiseth up a righteous nation, and destroyeth the nations of the wicked. And he leadeth away the righteous into precious lands, and the wicked he destroyeth, and curseth the land unto them for their sakes.

In fact, much of the Old Testament is a study showing that righteousness brings blessings and wickedness brings the opposite. Deuteronomy is filled with these promises; see especially Deuteronomy chapter 28.

Drawing this all together, let me ask, who prompted Balaam to tell King Balak how to defeat the Israelites? And who would like to destroy this country, which was set up by God? I believe this country is one of the great road blocks standing in the tempter's way. The powers of darkness are now waging a multi-pronged attack on America and it's God-given institutions. This many pronged attack started 100 years ago and now the trap is being sprung.

The dark side is apparently winning. Those who get in his way pay a heavy price. LDS Church leader, Dalan H Oaks was called the most hated man in America by Keith Olbermann, one of MSNBC's commentators, for daring to speak out. The IRS and an audit by them have long been used to silence dissent. Hardly anyone lately can speak out for truth and righteousness for fear of the repercussions they know they will receive. Really, who dares speak out for prayer in schools, the sanctity of heterosexual marriage, the sanctity of unborn human life or the principles of free government? To do so is to be branded and ostracized with all sorts of labels. The answer is, only the truly brave.

I do understand that all things must be done in wisdom when fighting the forces of evil. Christ said, Behold, I sent you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; be ye therefore wise servants, and as harmless as doves. (Matthew 10:14)

We must be in the world but not of the world. And we can no doubt accomplish much more good by remaining in the world, letting God guide us in what we should do and say in persuading others to do good.

Ever encroaching evil continues to darken the landscape of America at an alarmingly increasing pace. How long will it be before we no longer merit the blessings of God? Is it even now too late? Is there not now a great need and responsibility to spread the word of God in hopes the nation will repent and escape catastrophe? I've ask myself many times how the Germans permitted the wildly radical Hitler to come to power. I simply couldn't understand it and found great fault in them. Now, I know the answer to this question and am a lot less judgmental... - because we are on the road to being there ourselves as a nation.
